Handout on Lines of fit

Chapter 3 test on Monday (Blue day) / Tuesday (Gold day)

Instructions on how to plot a "line-of-fit" for a given set of data.

a) Plot the data on a graph.
b) Find the five-number summaries for the x-values and the y-values.
c) Graph the first-quartile and third-quartile values for x and y as dashed lines (vertical for x, horizontal for y). These will make a rectangle. The vertices of this rectangle are the Q-points.
d) Draw the diagonal of this rectangle that shows the direction of the data. Extend the diagonal through the plot. This is your line of best fit.
e) Find the coordinates of the two Q-points the line goes through, and calculate the slope of the line.
f) Find the y-intercept of the line, and write the equation of the line.
